Thanks to all for comments. Brian - I definitely took your comments as constructive - just wished to explain why I was grateful to get a nice photo at all 8-) After another look at the distance, aperture, etc. I realize that in addition to any "softness" imparted by the TCON, the is also a very narrow depth of focus ("eyes to whiskers") contributing to the soft look.

I like the softness of this picture, intentional or not. It expresses a living creature, and beautifully. One of my favorite painters of wildlife paints animals with a bit of blur for motion. They look very alive. I think this photo does the same thing, though it's not really blurry. Cindy C

Tim, good point. With photography you almost always have to make a trade off, and it looks like you made the right choice. In an ideal world you could have had a fast shutter speed and small aperture, but this is not an ideal world. It's a very nicely done shot, I hope I didn't come across as being too critical, as I was aiming for constructive criticism.

I'm happy with it as is. If I pushed the aperture to f/8, the shutter speed would have been way too slow. This is a restless year old tiger and the only reason he looks relaxed is that I used a fast enough shutter before he got up and moved ... again. I also took a chance with noise by pushing it to ISO 200.

I agree with Linda, it's a nicely composed photo of an excellent subject, but there is a definite softness to it, most likely caused by a combination of the TCON and large aperture (F2.8). Next time, try a smaller aperture (i.e., F8) to see if that makes a difference.

Wonderful shot, Tim. What a beauty he is. I love his expression and the catch-light in the eyes.

The TCON does take the edge off, softens but not all bad here. What a beautiful creature and rich color. Linda
