Red squirrel
This little guy was most unhappy with me. He was in a walnut tree and from the way he was behaving, scolding and stamping his feet, I guess he thought I was after his food! Long after I walked away I could hear him chittering and scolding. While I was taking his photo, his whole body was shaking with the vehemence of his annoyance.

Peromyscus sp. mouse
I was checking a few nest boxes, thinking that I must get around to cleaning them out soon, when this little guy popped out from a meagre pile of nest material and stuck his head out the back of the box.

Asian ladybeetle larva
The peculiar looking larva of the Asian ladybeetle was on the leaf of a swamp milkweed, while on another leaf was the pupa of the same species, and a few adults nearby. How I wished they would all end up on the same leaf!!

Northern Cardinal, male
A moulting male, looking rather raggedy right now, but when he assumes full adult plumage he'll be a knockout.

Northern Cardinal, female
Feast time! This is the time of year when all the fruit is ripe and ready for eating. Birds and small mammals are harvesting and sometimes storing, crabapples, walnuts, acorns, nannyberries, wild plums, hawthorns, mountain ash fruit, and so on.

Young Meadow Vole
This very small guy was trundling across the service road when he suddenly froze at the approach of a dog. I scooped him up and helped him to a safer spot (after the dog left). What a cutie.
