Another tree bud that looks ready to grow instead of lying dormant for the winter. According to friends on Facebook, this is definitely a Butternut, not the similar Black Walnut, which is also abundant at the FWG. Features to look for are the "smile" or "monkey face" where last year's leaves have fallen off, as well as a "moustache" above the leaf scar. Our tree authority, Owen Clarkin, thinks this might be a hybrid between Juglans cinerea (our native Butternut) and J. ailantifolia (a Japanese relative). (SG)
