Fungus (Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae)

This peculiar looking protrusion is a fungus that causes cedar-apple rust. The host is usually eastern red-cedar as here, but juniper is also a host. At the Fletcher Wildlife Garden there are a number of crabapples and the leaves frequently show evidence of the rust.
