Hypena opulenta damage on DSV leaves

This photo shows leaves of dog-strangling vine chewed by the Hypena opulenta caterpillar at the release site. This is the first time such a thing has been seen in Canada. The plant and the moth are native to the Ukraine, and the moth has been brought over to try and control the aggressively invasive vine.

The moths were only released after rigorous testing which took place over many years. There is always a risk when introducing one non-native species to control another, but unlike the old days when species were released with no or little testing, these days, lessons learned, controlled testing in both country of origin and country of potential release are rigorous and lengthy.

Certainly any progeny of these testers will not lack for food. This is really good news.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on the progress with the released Hypena Moths , Christine. Looks like the caterpillars have been eating good sized holes in the leaves. Let'shope they are now well nourished , complete their life cycles and reproduce many more of themselves to continue chomping away on this noxious weed.
