American bittersweet (Celastrus scandens)

This is the native bittersweet vine as indicated by the terminal cluster of fruit. It was growing on the south edge of the New Woods for some years, entwined around itself creating a small mound. I haven't seen it for awhile and think it may have been mowed down when the site was mowed for dog-strangling vine, but I will check again in spring 2014.

An interesting splash of colour against a wintery background.
