Sphecid wasp (Sphex ichneumoneus)

One of the big beautiful Sphecid wasps that appear in mid summer. The other noticeable one is the Sphex pensylvanicus, the big black digger.

Lovely picture with the orange and black wasp highlighted against the white and yellow flowers. The way he is spreading his legs out to cover the flowers ,he looks like he is making sure no one else gets any of his food source.
