Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense)

Old field habitat. Note the sweat bee in the flowerhead. This non-native species is an aggressive invader of open areas such as meadows and fields. However, the seeds are eaten by many species of birds, and the thistle down is used as nest material by American goldfinches.
