Bald-faced hornets (Family: Vespidae, Subfamily: Vespinae, Species: Dolichovespula maculata)

This species is known for its conspicuous and large paper nest which hangs from shrubs and trees. Bald-faced hornets can be aggressive if their nest is attacked, or if someone passes too close to the structure, but on the whole, they leave us alone if we leave them alone.

For a full list of all insects found at the FWG, please see Insects of the FWG
