This workshop utilizes 2 tools of lighting up subjects -- subtractive and reflective, since they are the easiest tools in an outdoor situation. In subtractive lighting, we look for shades in trees, awnings, etc. The trick is to discern where the light comes from, since we can't see direct sun's rays, but bounced and reflected lights still come in from different directions. By deciding where the main light is, and where the reflected lights and back lights are, we can place the subject so the lights simulate studio lights, albeit subtly. In a studio, we move the lights, but in an outdoor environment, we move the subject. At times when the ancillary lights are inadequate, we use a white reflector for fill light. Sometimes, an ideal location does not have shades to provide 'subtraction', and if the light from above is diffused enough, we use a reflector to provide an offsetting balance from below.
