Sharm El Sheik, Easter 2006

One short week of snorkeling, and visiting in the Sinai
aDSC_9938.JPG aDSC_9941.JPG The 500m pontoon out of the Calimera Beach hotel, after which there are still 50-100m before reaching the cliff. On the right at 20 min. snorkeling are several boat wrecks that make you feel like inside the Titanic. On the left after various other wrecks and if you have the guts to swim 90-120 min. you'll reach the next beach of the hotel (normally you take a bus or do the 5-10 minutes walk)

Fishes range from Napoleon (series of several tens, average size 50 cm), parrot, picasso, clown, butterfly, masked unicorn, anemone fish, emperor and many other anglefish, star puffer (40-50 cm, several , impressive) and porcupinefish, yellowhead, spotted trunkfish, lionfish (some in couple), moray, and a large variety of wrasses (including bird wrasse). I even found a barracuda (70 cm). This site is amazing and splendid.

This is the next beach. Today was black because of strong wind. But usually snorkeling is unmatched. Directly from the beach. Again, 90-120 minutes later on the right you'll rejoin the hotel pontoon. Outside of red that was lacking, you can find here all the colors among the corals.(Comment follows on previous slide!)

Naama Bay, the village. If you need shopping or going out. You have to pay for any beach and the hotels are not as nice as outside. Better shopping and rates in Dahab 100 km north.

DSC_0108.JPG DSC_0111.JPG Start of our excursion to Ras Mohammed National Park. A real rip-off! 30 € for several hours of waiting, then sea time to the paradise, not half as nice than the hotel beach, histerical guides (the boat name was Paradiso) forcing you to swim fins to cheek.

Start of our "excursion" to Ras Mohammed National Park. A real rip-off! 30 € for several hours of waiting, then sea time to the "paradise", not half as nice than the hotel beach, histerical guides (the boat name was "Paradiso") forcing you to swim fins to cheek.

No way to have any serenity (some could not even see a fish!). Total snorkel time: first time 22 min. second 15 min. All this followed by average food and 90 minutes swimming in front of another hotel. Let's just forget Ras Mohammed and their so-called tours.

On our way to Saint Catherine. One of the best one day excursion ever! After Saint Catherine we slalom through te Sinai to rejoin Dahab, nice place to stay and shop. We missed the white canyon, the colored canyon and a possible several days trip in the desert. Next time...

DSC_0297.JPG Saint Catherine! We could have chosen instead of our tour to climb Mount Moses during the night to be on top at dawn. 3 hours hard walk. Next time again!

DSC_0419.JPG Saint Catherine from above. In addition to the tour there is a possibility to visit the museum. There are many beautiful icons. Also 20-30 manuscripts like the rule of Saint John Climacus, one edition of 8th century next to a 13th century copy. The oldest is a 8th century palimpsest on a 5th century original.

The 16,000 items library can't be visited. However if you have the time to discuss and a real interest, I'm persuaded that they let you in. Nonetheless the most precious and interesting one, the Codex Sinaiticus has been borrowed by Tischendorf around 1850.

Now they're tring to persuade the British Library, Leipzig University and the Russian National Library to bring it back to where it belongs. Amazingly there is a Jaeger Lecoultre Atmos (Millenium edition) clock that is waiting another good Swiss watchmaker (or at least watch fixing skills)to make it function again.
