The Maglev train from the Pudong airport: During peak hours it speeds up to 400+ km/h. As it was too early this one was only going to 300 km/h (for this you get a 10 RMB rebate on the 50 RMB ticket). From there you can take the subway to the city. Don't miss this! |
OK, during peak hours avoid heavy luggage in the subway! Otherwise it's the most convenient way to travel (not in the old town though for which you need to take a taxi). Also beware: all trains stop at 22:30! like the shops. And the restaurants. |
Outside of the crowded subway you have to realize that 1B+ people and the fastest growing business require adequate buildings. I bet that this one will be occupied before being finished. |
In contrast to the skyscrapers there are lions in couple guarding every house since centuries. |
Believe it or not, you can be blonde and able to get subway tickets from this machine! |
Unlike last time stations are also indicated in English easing up a lot transportation. If you take a taxi, make sure that you have a paper or a book with your destinations written in chinese. |
Next to the skyscrapers you will find this smart area for yuppies. Beer price rocket high. |

Two among the tallest buildings in Shanghai: The one in the front is the Jin Mao Tower. The one in the back is the Shanghai World Financial Center. Both host an Hyatt hotel in the upper floors. Later on you'll see views over the first building from the Park Hyatt on the WFC. (this one was taken with a tripod and the 70-200 f/2.8 VSR) |

And this is another skyscraper under the moon (or is it the sun? I let you guess) |
In the oldest tea house of the old Shanghai. |

The Bund promenade that is under preparation for the Universal exhibition of 2010 shows the best skyline panorama... |
... specifically at night. |
From the Bund you can take a little underwater cabin to the other side of the river with a lightshow that you should not miss. I took it both ways. |

Night train from Shanghai to Beijing. Nice trip, although the bed was to hard for the ladies. |
On the way to the forbidden city and Tienanmen square (Tienanmen at the end of this collection). |

A would-be photographer at the great wall, before taking the chairlift. |
The other way to return instead of the chairlift is the slide. |
The great wall at Mutianyu! (last time we went to Badaling, but Badaling is overcrowded. And OK this was seventeen years ago, so I can hardly imagine how busy Badaling is today). |
Last time the sky was clearer. But digital photography didn't exist! |

Going up and down ad nauseam! |

I guess this is a chinese beauty. Stunning! |
The following pictures are from the "Great Red Gate" on the "Spirit Way" (Shen dao). Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ming_Dynasty_Tombs |

On our way back from the great wall and the Ming tombs we wanted to have a look at the olympic stadium designed by the swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. Our taxi man was very kind to show it to us. Btw if you are there to visit try to book him: his name is Tian Chin Yo, his cab is BF5145 and his phone number is 13701174159. We managed to have him for the entire day for 800 RMB (plus the entrance fees and a tip at the end that he was not expecting) |
A nice place at the begin of the Summer palace. Take the subway and then the bus 808 until the end. In a few years there will be a subway going directly to it. We made the mistake to return by taxi: seventy time the price of a subway ticket! |
