Strobist

Been trying to figure out how to add to my bag of lighting tricks. Thought I'd try a touch of full power strobe thru an umbrella to camera left, and balance it by underexposing the daylight by 2 stops. Strobist.com readers have been doing this for ages, but I just never got around to trying it out.

I might have to try 3 stops next time, or wait until the sun is a little further down on the horizon. I could go without the umbrella as well to get more light onto the subject, but I didn't want the light to be too harsh for my first try at this.

Here's one of the out takes. I wanted his hand open on his hip and didn't notice it until the shot was taken. Better light on that one though, he's closer to the light.

Regardless, John, I like the shot. It opens up Ian's face and right side but preserves a lot of contrast. I'd be interested to see it in B&W.
