Built in 1909, the Stanley Hotel commands a majestic presence
as it sits on a hill overlooking the town of Estes Park
and the surrounding mountains.
It's a great place for history, architecture, and ghost story buffs to visit,
as it has a rich background, dating back to 1903
when F.O. Stanley purchased the 160-acre plot of land
and built the main building of the hotel in traditional Georgian style.
Despite its famous architecture and history
(it's on the National Register of Historic Places),
the Stanley is probably most well-known
for being the inspiration
for renowned horror author Stephen King's novel, The Shining.
The hotel is home to countless ghost stories
and first-person accounts of paranormal activity,
both from guests and staff of the hotel.
