One of the most spectacular landscapes of the Curonian Spit – the Grey Dunes are behind me.
They are made of spectacular ravines formed by strong winds and sand,
grassy flora, and the old fragments of the forest soil.
The Gray Dunes harbour one of the saddest stories sand-bound Curonian Spit villages.
More then three hundred years ago there was Nagliai village here,
inhabitants of which moved several times from one place to another
while retreating from the wind-blown sand.
After a long and unsuccessful struggle with the shifting dunes
(dune movement speed being from 0.5 to 5 meters a year)
people left the site of the last village.
People lost the battle against the sand and the whole village,
church and cemetery are buried in the sand.
