It's charming when there's no crowd around....

Venezia (Italy)

Behind the mask...a bit of creeping boredom!

You know what? I’m getting really bored with this tedious ritual of carnival...

I wore my second costume (all masks must have at least two costumes...) and I went out for a walk, before the daily invasions of merry tourists.

Up and down up and down...all the steps of every little bridge, all my old bones are aching....

You cannot imagine how busy and hectic Venice is in these daysl; it’s full of photographers and visitors and they all push each other in the narrow ancient alleys as people on London Underground trains in the rush hours...

I am deeply missing my little cottage in my beloved Bearshire...

I want to put my slippers on instead of these uncomfortable high-heeled shoes. I want a little peace and silence around me. I want my kitchen. I want my books!

Did you know that Carnival had been quite neglected in Venice for a few centuries?
Only in 1980 did it start enjoying a revival...

In my humble opinion, now it’s a big business, but what is not a big business nowadays, after all?

Next time I’ll write another page of my diary it will be from home.
I leave you now, I have to go to pack up my baggage!

Violet, you do look wonderful and thank you for venturing to the carnival on our behalf. I can understand the discomfort, but when you return to Bearshire you will have memories and images to share with your good friends and neighbours, and you will also be able to convince them to have a more realistic view of something they romanticise.

Great outfit Violet! I am sure the carnival is a great spectacle, but sometimes these things can become victims of their own success, and I wonder if it is the case with Venice?

Oh...I'm so sorry to hear that Carnival has disappointed you, but I fully understand your dismay. I hate crowds and haven't worn high heels for many years. I also love my home and am happiest there. One of the advantages of being older is that we can do exactly what we want. We also are hopefully very aware of what pleases and doesn't please us and hopefully have the freedom to live accordingly. Best of all, if we want to see Carnival we can Google it from the comfort of our homes while we're dressed in our comfy clothes and slippers!
