Mosaics in Risan

Risan (Montenegro)

We continued our journey and arrived in Risan.
There is a lot to learn about Risan, which is
the oldest town in Boka Kotorska. There are traces of it from the 3rd century B.C.
In the past it had 10.000 inhabitants, now only about 2.300
The name Rhizon icomes from the Illyrian tribe Risonti
and the whole bay was called Sinus Rhizonicus.
It was the capital of the Illyrian Queen Teuta and center of trading and sailors
and was a prosperous Roman municipium "Rhiznium" in 1st and 2nd century.
We visited a Roman villa decorated with ornaments and floor mosaics.
Risan was conquered by Avars, Slovens, Turks, Venice, Austro-Hungars
The first public library in Montenegro was founded here in 1835.
