Common Rabbitbrush

Also called: Gray Rabbitbrush

Chrysothamnus nauseosus

Gr. chrysos, gold; thanmos, shrub;
nauseosus, either refers to smell of the plant or to it’s disagreeable flavor.

Description. Rabbitbrush is a native, tap-rooted, many branched shrub, with soft gray-green leaves and stems. It grows to 1m (3’) high and wide and in the fall the branches terminate in yellow-gold hair-like bunches of blooms. Rabbitbrush can be found in open grasslands and in disturbed soils.

Historical plant use. Rabbitbrush was made into teas for treating sore throats and to ease cramps after giving birth. The branches were used for smoking hides. This shrub is eaten by rabbits, deer and sheep, but is low on the desirability list.
