From the Summit of Santorini

Santorini, Greece

Best viewed in "original".

An unusual perspective of the island. Looking toward the caldera the villages of Fira (dead center) and Oia (trailing to the left) can just be distinguished as can the crater circle. The cone is in the foreground of the caldera just peeking above the near rim. Terraced vineyards, and other agricultural projects can be distinguished. To the right is the airport runway, continuing for ever, it seems. Notice the shadows cast on the island by the passing clouds and the mythic Aegean stretching to the horizon.

I was on Santorini in '68 and have cherished it ever since. Thank you for taking me back through your imaginatively and photographically vivid images.

This wide angle view shows nicely the structure of Santorin Island with the volcano caldera in the front. On flat portions behind the caldera there is a lot of farming while the mountainous part is is used for wineyards. Santorin produce quite strong red and fruity white wines one can drink on the place.
