Whiteness as a race, can only be seen in relation to other categories, such as class, gender, sexuality, and so on, that render any category problematic. (Nakayama, T.& Martin, J., 1999) Whiteness is a social construct, in a postmodern world of labeling and categorizing. Who am I? I am an individualistic, European-American, white woman where my race dominates other racial configurations in Western society. As a foreigner and a linguist, I subscribe to another label as ex-patriot of the United States, thereby creating another cultural space. This painting is about my white, racial identity.
