Bass Harbor Head Light

Bass Harbor, Maine

This is a recent scan from an old slide I took in August of 1982 - This light is near Arcadia National Park. It was built in 1858 and was automated in 1974. I saw the schooner go by where I was in the park and thought it might sail near the lighthouse. I was about 10 miles from the lighthouse at the time and had never been to the lighthouse before. So I raced the ten miles to the lighthouse and got there just in time. It is an operating lighthouse and now (2008) is a private building, but you can still stand where you see the people. You can no longer climb down to where I was when I took this picture. I guess you could approach the same shore spot from a boat, and row in with a skiff. The tower is 32 feet high. Tougher to climb down that way without the walkway, but I remember doing it, as well. Lovely.

What a stroke of luck to have such a beautiful ship pass by right then.

Excellent shot. It's a shame that the adventerous can no longer get to the spot by foot.
