01 March 2004 - xxx

  • POTD (Still Life) at DigitalPhotoNut.com for 24 July 2004

  • As usual, I had a different picture in my mind but that one didn't work. However, I'm really pleased how this one came out, so that's ok :) Basically, I took 3 cross-shaped icecubes, balanced them on a lightbox and held black card-board behind the lightbox. Aligned the camera so that the lightbox itself is not visible. Then underexposed. Since I had set the white-balance with two lightsources initially and I turned one of them off half-way through taking the photos it's not quite right and the icecubes are slightly blue. That saved me the trouble of colorizing them in PaintShopPro :)

Very little post-processing done to the final image. A very slight saturation, some cloning out of reflections at the ends of the cubes where they touched the lightbox. Crop, resize, USM, add border and signature.

other sizes: small medium original auto

Very nice! And the explanation of how you did it is very helpful. You should try and sell this to a company in Amsterdam.....the xxx is the city abbreviation (some would say that triple x is a very apt one for amsterdam.....) Cheers, Lisa

Angela - Ikea's the place to buy them. Actually, those icecube trays are a total pain to fill with water since they are rubberized and not made from plastic and the icecubes are also not easy to get out of the trays. But they do make for unusual photos :)

Fascinating!! Love the black background - really sets them off. :D I must ask - where does one buy cross shaped ice cube trays to make such ice cubes with?
