David Livingstone, a missionary and physician, was the first European to discover these falls. He had travelled down the Zambezi River to examine for himself the area the natives called "smoke that thunders." Huge columns of spray and the thunderous roar of water could be seen and heard miles away from the falls. He later described it as "the most wonderful site I have witnessed in Africa."
