Trains on the Cajon Pass near the Mormon Rocks

The Cajon Pass connects the Los Angeles basin and the Majove Desert, and additional locations all the way to the east coast. The pass contains three rails, which allow a potential of handling more than 150 trains daily. Today, more than 50 freight trains and four passenger trains currently travel through, averaging one or two 150-car trains each hour. A favorite spot for train-watching is at the "Mormon Rocks", near the Hwy I-15 and 138 junction. These impressive sandstone rock formations are named for Mormon pioneers and later freighters who camped in the area after traveling across the Mojave desert.
