These fascinating formations are geothermal bubbling pots of mud and carbon dioxide gases escaping from beneath the surface crust. This crust is very fragile and underneath it is a sticky, slippery, gooey mud that became part of my boots and clothes while I was shooting. Besides the eerie landscape, the constant gurgling sounds of these mud volcanoes make this feel like a particularly strange place to be.
This site is located on the southeast end of the Salton Sea.
