Old Montana Prison

The Old Montana Prison was established in Deer Lodge in 1871, in an attempt to tame bands of outlaws and vigilantes roaming the early Montana territory. It was an active prison until 1979, when a new prison was opened west of town. Much of the prison and its equipment remains intact and is preserved by the Powell County Museum and Arts Foundation.
