On the eastern side (left) of the bridge is the new self-anchored, single-tower suspension span that replaces one that partially collapsed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The SF-Oakland Bay Bridge has always been a poor second-cousin to the Golden Gate Bridge. According to the publication, "The Week," this beautiful new glowing white span may help the Bay Bridge give the Golden Gate a run for its money.
