Charcoal Kilns , off Emigrant Canyon Road

Death Valley National Park

These 10 beehive-shaped kilns were designed by Swiss engineers and built by Chinese laborers in the 1870's to produce charcoal from the surrounding pinon pine forest. The charcoal was transported 25 miles west to the Modoc Mine smelter.
