Honey Island Swamp

This 250-square-mile swamp is a wildlife sanctuary north of New Orleans in Slidell, Louisiana. I had visited this area shortly after it was heavily damaged by the Katrina Hurricane, and recently returned to find life had pretty well returned to normal. Some residences still remain in disrepair. The weather was too cold for alligators to surface, although our guide managed to produce a youngster which seemed to tolerate being held.
