The Gazdan Adam (Tear Gas Man)Festival was sponsored and organized by political parties and media organizations in response to the Turkish government's eviction of protesters from Gezi Park and its crackdown on related protests. With the festival's title, speakers and roster of local musicians, the organizers billed the event as a peaceful celebration. A show of solidarity and mockery of the government's attempts to stifle dissent, Gazdan Adam was the first mass gathering held on the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul during the Gezi Park protests. An estimated 1 million demonstrators or onlookers simply enjoying the atmosphere filled the streets of Kadıköy, without any incidence of violence.
