Air Show 2004 Indianapolis

I have now updated my website to show more pictures from the Indy Air Show last weekend at Mount Comfort, kind of a tribute to WWII veterans with all the old warbirds that are still flying. Of particular interest to me are the pictures of the B-17 Flying Fortress, since my Uncle Fred was a B17 pilot and survived many hazardous missions in the European Theater. The twin-tailed P38 is one of only a few still flying, and represents the plane that shot down the famous Japanese Admiral Yamamoto. The PBY Catalina Flying Boat is significant because of its relation to the USS Indianapolis when it was sunk by Japanese submarines after delivering the A-bomb. Survivors in the shark infested waters were relieved when the Catalina set down in the Pacific waters and the sailors were able to climb up on the massive wings while awaiting their rescue. And of course the P51 is still one of the most beautiful fighter planes ever designed. In a tribute to the Vietnam veterans, a mock Air Calvary assault was conducted; hence the pictures of the helicopters. The one picture of the dashing Cobra pilot, a Vietnam veteran helo pilot is important because in the morning he took us for a ride on one of the original Hueys that served in Vietnam. I hope that you enjoy these pictures and remember all the sacrifices that were made to keep our country free.
