Once I saw what wonderful conditions we had for unique photography, I ran back to the cabin and loaded up both cameras (Kodak P850 and Canon G3) and batteries. I saw this image coming. Lighting conditions were difficult, with more dynamic range than the camera could easily handle, but conditions were also not right for my split neutral density filter, given that I had darkness on both the top and bottom of the image. I set the camera to center weighted metering and then watched the quality of the images right after taking them. Because the ship was moving at 25 knots, I didn't have long to compose any one of these images. All were hand held. I like the layering and visual offsets in this image.
