According to a bird book I have, the difference between a male Red winged black bird and a male tri colored blackbird is:
The red winged blackbird has a yellowish not white border to the red shoulder batch. So, my bad…. The tricolored black bird has a red patch with WHITE under the patch and your photo indeed has a yellow patch.

Very nice! How can the difference between a tri-colored and a red-winged be determined? Both have red and yellow. I think the redwinged has more red than yellow, which makes this one a red winged
