Hmn... Im not sure what kind it is, but if you've ever read Harry Potter, there's a line that says "Rita Skeeter is a beetle!" ...Maybe you caught her? ;)

Nice and sharp! I know nothing about bugs though...looks kind of like ones that my parents get at their house that when you squish them they smell like apples (thus they were dubbed "apple bugs", LOL...I think we looked them up one time and found out the real name, I want to say pine beetle, but I could be wrong)

Found another photo of an "Assassin" that looks similar to yours -http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/30985335

Vern, I looked through our Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Insects and Spiders, and didn't really find a match. Looked most similar to a bug called a Bee Assassin, Same type of build, including spotted edges, but the white across the middle of back in yours looks different. Could check this site for similar or related bugs:http://www.uky.edu/Ag/CritterFiles/casefile/insects/bugs/assassin/assassin.htm#bee

It's pretty similar to what we call a Wheat Bug. Markings are a little different.

Oh Gosh you have these things too?? They destroy your garden. I don't know what they are though. I really like the background you photographed it on

I have no idea, but it sure has a nice pattern, and the photo is very sharp.

It is so funny you should email this to me! You see, I have encountered these bugs in my backyard in springfield. I ended up traping one of them in my back yard and then later, when I gathered up the courage, I set him free. The bugs in my backyard have the same body (noticably it's back and the two odd thin bumps on it's back legs), but I haven't seen one with the white stripes yet. Please let me know if you find out what kind of bug it is!!
