Not a Snake in the Grass

I have never posted this photo I shot in the Fern Ridge Wildlife Area back before I broke my hip. As I walked a trail through part of the wildlife area, I almost stepped on this turtle. It was a complete surprise to see it a ways away from any water. You can tell that my presence didn't seem to alarm it. Even when I got down for a closer shot, it just sat there. Quite an unexpected treat!

Looks like a box turtle. Out here in Va there are lots of them. Maybe in Or it’s something different. They live away from water more than in it. Interesting fact, they live their entire life within a mile radius and if they are moved away from their area they will roam lost . Like all turtles, they can get a disease just from people touching them so it’s not a good idea to touch them at all.of course if it’s in the middle of a road and won’t move on it may be better to touch than it getting hit by a car.

An interesting close-up Vern! We have no native turtles anymore, only invading species like Red eared Sliders V
