What's That About a Bird in the Bush?

Talk about getting a bird in a bush! This bird, seen in late afternoon light and deep shadows, is very difficult for me to ID. In some ways it looks similar to a female house sparrow, but seems to me that the colors may be different. The features I find to stand out about it are the thick beak, whitish breast, and the wings of dark and light brown, with streaks of white. Anyone refer me to online information about what bird it is?

I agree with Laura. Female Hose Sparrow. Nice capture in the leaves.

Looks like a immature female Blue Grosbeak. But you are north of their range although they have been working their way north. v

It’s paying close attention to you. Maybe it thinks you’re a male sparrow?

Lovely capture, Vern. Female House Sparrow looks like a good guess to me too. A bit hard to be certain with the green leaves covering important distinguishing areas on the head and back. But in any case, she is so pretty and I love the attractive setting you got her in - with the bright greens, the dark background and the pretty berries. Well done!
