Big Leaf Maple Bud

I always thought that these buds were pretty but never knew exactly what they were. When visiting Alton Baker Park, I made sure what tree they were on. And I checked online for the ID. Here is a good link to show the bud: http://oregonstate.edu/trees/broadleaf_genera/species/maple_spp.html
