Nice Catch!

I saw this Osprey toward the other side of the Willamette River and wasn't sure why it was out there. With the D7100 and 80-400 VR, I could see it had a catch, a pretty large fish.

I wondered if it was in a position like another Osprey I saw in Delta Ponds a couple or more years ago. That one was along the bank of a pond with a huge fish, and it was trying to fly across the pond with it. The fish was too heavy. It struggled along across the pond and finally made it to the other side. Trouble was that over there it was soon surrounded by Turkey Vultures just waiting for it to leave the fish. The Osprey stayed there feeding on what it could before the inevitable, when the vultures would close in and share the meal.

Awesome capture for both of you, Vern! The fish probably weighted more than the Osprey. ~V

What an amazing event to witness and capture with a camera. Sometimes it is easy to forget how much of a struggle survival is. Excellent composition. Voted.

Terrific catch x2 Vern. Excellent observations too. I saw the same thing withe a Peregrine Falcon once. It had caught a Coot and was hurriedly trying to eat it with wings out to hide it; however, about eight Vultures moved in and the Falcon wisely decided to take off.

Wonder if he had a hard time getting airborne from a standing start with a load like that.
