When a Tree Falls in the Forest

When I saw this log, I saw not just an old dead tree but the cycles of nature at work. The elements making up this tree do not go out of existence, they merely change. As we can see, the elements making up the dead tree become nourishment for the moss and ferns now growing from it. Another of the miracles of nature that can only be explained by recognizing the wisdom at work that is beyond the capabilities and wisdom of mere man. Don't know about you, but it humbles me!

Delightful in so many ways, Vern. And I agree, seeing the beauty and awesome capacity of the natural world can only point the way to the One who made it that way. Very humbling indeed. :)

When I lived in the Queen Charlotte Islands the big trees there took 500 years to reach full growth, lived for 1000 years and took 500 years to rot after falling over. The eco system of the rain forest created by that process cannot be recreated by tree planting after logging takes place.

I find that the cycles of nature are difficult to pin down in a simple way. I have watched all the brown sediment flowing down the overflowing and discolored Potomac after a storm and wondered about how this massive process is irreversible. But this process has been going on over the ages, and may be a part of a different kind of cycle.
