Biking in Alton Baker Park

This type of bike is seen occasionally around Eugene. Looks comfortable but I don't know that I could keep one upright. Bike riders use the paths through Alton Baker Park a lot, rain or shine, as you see here. I learned this type of bike is a 'Recumbent'.

Recumbent Bikes

"Born out of the marriage between a bicycle & a deckchair, recumbent bikes offer a laid back reclined riding position which are chosen for, mainly, ergonomic reasons. The rider’s back & buttocks are well supported giving rise to a very comfortable riding position. With a smaller frontal profile &, hence, lower wind resistance, most recumbent bikes offer an aerodynamic advantage over conventional bike types. Available in a wide range of configurations, recumbent bikes can be long to short wheelbase, with mixed sized wheels, rear wheel or front wheels drive & offer different steering methods too – overseat, underseat or no-hands. I think that it is fair to say that recumbent bikes have a very loyal & bordering on cult following." - http://www.bikesoup.com/guides

It sure seems like more work than a sit on bike!

Excellent colorful candid,Vern!

Considering the heavy overcast the exposure is very nice, color and clarity are great. The D800 and 24-120mm seem to work well together.

Ohh, super capture of this!

I'd like try one, but I think I would need training wheels in the beginning.
Hank Vander Velde09-Feb-2015 15:28
Very nice image and good description Vern. A cult like following, for sure i would say.

I have an old friend that has used a "bent bike for decades. I tried it once or twice and found it unnerving. So, I have stuck with a traditional "wedge" bike for a single as well, of course, as the tandem. Next up is low slung trikes made of high tech material. Very stable.

Lovely shot, Vern. Interesting info on the bike.

Looks comfortable but I am not totally sure.V
Ed Duverger09-Feb-2015 12:35
We have a lower variety here.
Tom LeRoy09-Feb-2015 10:36
A cool shot of the "bent.. I have a tandem version of this and once you get balanced it's very easy to ride. Also better for your back and knees. V

Certainly is interesting to see and read the story Vern - I wonder how they
get their balance initially?

A great find and interesting information, but I think it looks pretty bizarre for a bicycle!
Laura Milholland09-Feb-2015 07:25
It does look comfortable, but I think it looks like it might be harder when you start and stop, for me anyways! ;) Nice shot, Vern, and very interesting info.
