A friend and I decided to try the Aufderheide Scenic Byway in the Cascades from Westfir to The McKenzie Highway. We turned back when the snow between tire tracks was scraping on the underside of the SUV, and it was snowing. The road continues to climb through the mountains before it drops down to join the McKenzie Hwy. There were trees down across the road that had been cut in half so that vehicles could go through. But the road is not maintained in the winter. We decided we didn't want to spend the night in the mountains so headed back the way we came. It was a lot of fun, just the same.
