The Lone Wolf

In all the times I have come and watched the wolves, This day was the hardest. Its well known that within the pack there is someone at the top and someone at the bottom. This time of year is when the pack dynamic changes through fighting. At the last feeding this 8 yr old male tried to move up the ladder. He won the first fight - but has lost the rest...Badly. He is now 'The Lone Wolf'. Regardless of the setting being completely out in the wild or in a setting like this one - The Lone Wolf doesnt last long. During the time I was there I witnessed one of the fights... It left me speechless.

I like this shot because I see this same situation taking place at the International Wolf Center in Ely. The alpha wolf, who is an arctic, is named Shadow and is 8 years old. He is going to lose his place in the hierarchy to Grizzer, a gray who is in his prime at 5 years, at some point in time. Usually, the wolves are fed once a week but they have been feeding them twice to try and mollify Grizzer. He gets quite agitated otherwise! The people at the IWC are watching the situation very closely and aren't quite sure what's going to happen. There will be two pups brought to the Center this spring. I'm not sure if this will help or hurt the leadership situation.
