I don't think this is an aesthetic matter, Tricia -- it is matter of content and meaning. If this image was intended as an advertisement for that shirt, the color version would be much stronger. But converted to black and white here, the shirt only functions as a compositional aid, each band pointing to the smoker. It both provides context and leads the eye to the content of the image. When ever we choose to present an image in black and white or in color, we should consider the benefits and pitfalls of each medium, and use the one that tells our story most expressively, as you do here.
