The Lost Soul

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Spotted this man sitting at the bus stop in his own little world. There he sat all by himself with his dirty looking clothes and jeans. He doesn't even careless of what was happening around him like a lost soul in the city.

Another coment ! I know, you have a lot of coments on this one .. but that tells you two things ! Photographers are sensibles to the sadness .. and are sensibles dot...
And your photography is powerful ! Congratulations...

Tricia, there are so many levels of need in the world of the homeless. This poor fellow appears to have given up...which one cannot blame. Here too even in our rich city and country we have a homeless problem. One of our projects is to create 400 housing units for people of different needs and levels. Everybody knows it is required...but nobody wants it in their community. Even this number only begins to address the problem. The trick is to help people while they still can and want to be helped! Once they are beyond that it is doubtful that they will ever climb back...thanks for provoking the thoughts and dialogue!
Guest 07-Jun-2007 03:19
He shows something that is close to happiness! Good candid.
Jay Levin07-Jun-2007 02:04
One has to feel sorry for this poor fellow. Something drove him to this sad state of affairs so perfectly captured here. Vote

Erika,
Exactly what I was thinking about some of the `homeless' who suffer from "mental illness". Like Guenter noticed the `smile', I also did but like I said - it's not that kind of `smile' we see.
Wei O'Connell07-Jun-2007 00:40
One more lost soul! Great street portrait.

Excellent shot! Very expressive.
Dr. Michael G. Mathews06-Jun-2007 19:32
Wonderful composition. Some folks live in their own little world to combat the frantic action of the city surroundings, though I suspect that is not the case here ;-) Lovely image.

We have a lot of homelessness here in the United States, this is a familiar scene, and one that always saddens me because I know a lot of the homeless also suffer from mental illness and are further stigmatized by society.
Guest 06-Jun-2007 16:36
Gloom and doom.... Heaven forbid that he is waiting for a bus to take him home from a days work.
Zaid Kurdi06-Jun-2007 16:11

Lee G06-Jun-2007 15:04
I really like the muted colors and texture in this image. From the look of the wall he sits here and ponders his world quite often. Excellent job!
Galina Stepanova06-Jun-2007 15:02
The subject and environment work well together supporting and completing each other.
This is great picture, I am glad you used this opportunity, Tricia.

Nicely done. v.
Raymond06-Jun-2007 12:11
Trapped, hopeless, abandonned, lonely... destroyed... and very vulnerable. His life is reflected by what surounds him, hte wall, his clothes, his cleanliness ans probably his health. His escapes... running away, moving on, maybe begging and drugs... who knows... looking at the way things are, it's been happening for a while... yet, he's adapted to his life, maybe through acceptance... would he be in India, he'd probably be a sadhu, a sedentary lifestyle. Even his aura is black... I wouldn't touch this image in any way now, it's perfect as is... it says everything there's to say in this case.

I love everything about this fine image, the contrast between the lost soul and the wall , the composition , and the very nice resolution to give you the feeling of seeing him in person .

Even without your text the story is clear....
You are so good the picture needs no more......
Well done !!!
flowsnow06-Jun-2007 10:38
Guenter, Possible. Because when I took another look at him, he lay on the seat and yes he was smiling....I wonder why?....It's not the `normal' kind of smile you get from a person.
Guenter Eh06-Jun-2007 10:34
He is like a chameleon - adapted to his environment. His facial expression dominates the foto - the approach of a smile?
Andrew Vincent06-Jun-2007 10:22
Great photo journalism Tricia! Perfect tones for the story you are conveying. VOTE!
