Ana Mandara Villas, Da Lat, Vietnam

We shortlisted 3 hotels before our trip: the Dalat Palace Hotel, Edensee Lake Resort and the Ana Mandara. All 3 have top ratings online. We picked Ana Mandara at the end because of its colonial arhitecture and homely setting. We were not disappointed. During our visit, we checked out the other two places and concluded that Ana Mandara was still our choice for the next trip. The other two have their own merits. If you fancy Louis XIV type of furniture, walls decored with oil paintings and a vantage position near town, you may consider the Dalat Palace. We sipped tea there at the lounge one afternoon overlooking the manicured lawn and wondered how it was like in the days of the King and Queen and when the French was still around. The Edensee Lake Resort, in contrast, was a brand new property with sparkling white bathrooms and furniture. If you pick a suite facing the lake, you will be pleased with the 180 degree view of the Tuyen Lam Lake. The entire place was engrossed in the sun, perhaps to a point that was overwhelming because of the added effects of the white-washed walls and reflective mirrors and glasses. Perfect place to hide out for a couple of days if this is what you are looking for. The Ana Mandara sits on a hill top on the west side of town and is a class of its own. It is made up of a cluster of villas, each with very different layouts - thumbs-up to the architect who designed this place. In our villa studio suite, we had a real and functional fire place and our female butler would come help us lit it up in the evenings to keep the room warm and cozy. We could not say everything was perfect - the intention of the resort management was good, but execution sometimes ran short, but you would excuse the carelessness because of the other good things it offered. It is not an Aman graded resort as yet, but we love it all the same!
