Thanks Rob. I guess I jumped the gun on my ID but the image in my guide just didn't look right.

This is a Ruddy Duck: it has large, clear, white cheeks, and there is some ruddy color among the gray feathers. Black Scoter is be darker, and the light area on the cheek and throat is less extensive and not gleaming white.
