Fading Glory

George Morgan's beautifully carved Eagle shows its age in this 1899 dollar. The dark spot at left is a carbon deposit, a common impurity in 19th century coin silver. The ring of discoloration is usually caused by another, smaller, coin sitting on top over time leaving the uncovered part more exposed to atmospheric light and air.
