The Mount Evans Highway

Colorado

At over 14,000 feet, Mt Evans (the central massif in this picture) is one of the tallest mountains in Colorado. The right flank is crisscrossed by the road known as "The highest paved road in the world", which is right up there with "The world's deepest hand-dug well" in Greensburg, Kansas or "The world's biggest thermometer" in Barstow.

The road is open only in summer and then only when it doesn't snow. Its lower reaches curve around to the north (far) side where the Echo Lake Lodge proudly displays its autographed movie poster from "American Flyers". The lower stretch of the road was the set for the second portion of the movie race.

Views from the mountain are, of course, stunning but unless you're an Andean native the top is nearly unbreatheable.

This is a beautiful view of Mt Evans. At 14,264 ', Mt Evans ranks 14th on the list of Colorado's 54 peaks that are 14,000' or higher. (Colorado's highest is Mt Elbert at 14 ,433' which is second in the lower 48 states only to California's Mt Whitney 14,494').
