Mike has a good point - if putting the computer on a table or desk is not possible, you can buy pretty cheap "holders" that raise it a few inches above the floor - or simply put it on a strong footstool, making sure it's stable. Also, the computer seems to be quite close to the back wall - this means that there is not much ventilation in the back - older machines rarely had side vents - mind you, a 450 MHZ will not generate as much heat as a 4 GHZ machine.

Flat statements, such as "using any of Nortons newer Anti-Virus products on an older machine will make them die" are wrong. Guaranteed 100%. They will probably slow down-I won't deny that Norton AV uses a lot of resources-but they won't die unless there's an underlying problem.

'Resource Hog' BTW is perjorative & a matter of opinion. The biggest 'resource hog' I've ever seen is Windows-but all that means is that it needs a lot of resources for what it does, not that you shouldn't use it.

My husband advised me to move my CPU from the floor to a table, but I refused to open both ears,thatis,until I read the above article that reinforced what he was trying to make me understand. Now I'm about to move in a rolling typing table on which my CPU will now reside.

Cleaning is good but using any of Nortons newer Anti-Virus products on an older machine will make them die. Norton is a resouce hog.

Just one note Fred for JS and maybe others. It has been my experience that computers suck more dust if they are sat on the floor. Anyone can build a small table and put it beside the desk if need be and if it's too ugly put a table cloth over it. Plus you have a better vantage point of the drives. JS must keep his system cleaned, but many of my customers never take the cover off and look, until sometimes it's too late. They tell me, it use to make a noise and then it went away. I wonder why! With more fans in these new machines this is becoming a bigger problem. I think you should tell your readers that taking off the cover if only to take a look could save them $$$. It's like the man said "Pay me now or Pay me later" I hate giving customers bad new that could have been avoided, Sir\Madam you need a new CPU\Power Supply\ and or Video Card, especially now with fans on them. House cleaning needs not only to be software but hardware also.

I've been a Plus subscriber for almost a year now, and was a general on looker for a few years. I have found your information very useful because sometimes I don’t have time to look for new tools because one could spend hours reading reviews but I need only to read my Plus edition and have the Archives handy and I’m set. It's time saving for me and a very handy tool. Thanks Fred.
