Lower Macleay Trail, no tripod 2014 03 (Mar) 13

This trail follows Balch Creek through Pacific Northwest (groomed -- not virgin) old growth forest right into downtown Portland, Oregon. Hiking time: 101 minutes and 29.28 seconds. However, this was prefaced by a 30 minute exploration of the Pittock Bird Sanctuary network of trails run by Portland Audubon Society. In this album, all the images before #42 were in the Pittock Bird Sanctuary. The rest were on the Lower Macleay Trail.

Just outside the Audubon office, I saw a magnificent Turkey Vulture perched on a caregiver's arm as well as a Great Horned Owl perched on another caregiver's arm, and took pictures of both.

Took 164 pictures of which 97 made the cut. I did not bring my tripod, so all of these were hand-held, using Auto ISO (at the expense of image noise) and Aperture Preferred to insure fast enough shutter speeds. Used the 12-40mm Olympus lens going down the trail and the 40-150mm Olympus lens going back up the trail. The weather was 55° at the beginning and 60° at the end, and the skies were partly sunny. The trail was crawling with people.
